CHANGE AND EUROPE online preview
The rapid acceleration of changes in the world at times appeared focused
on Europe alone. The early developers of the Common Market could hardly
have imagined what took shape as the most powerful economic body in
world history rivaled in scope only by the ancient Roman Empire in world
sway and control. The vision of a United States of Europe based
more on economic union than a political one, exploded on the world scene
with the freeing of Eastern Europe from the stagnation of communism
and the shocking reuniting of the two Germanies. The thrust of the Soviet
Union into free market politics enhanced greatly the European power
base. All of Europe was a bustling beehive with associate membership
reaching with trade favors all around the Mediterranean perimeter. Every
nation of Europe was a vital part of the drive for worldwide prosperity
in a dominant one-world economy. Many leaders smelled the aromas of
once dreamed empires and utopias. The fragrance of peace on earth at
last was within the power of satisfying all economic needs, removing
poverty as a natural well thought by product was championed.
